4. How do you use Cantu correctly?

The Complete Curly Routine with Cantu

  1. Wash with a Co-Wash shampoo—apply to damp hair, massage in, then rinse.
  2. Work the conditioner into your hair, let it sit for a few minutes (2–5 minutes), comb or brush through your curls to detangle them, then rinse. For very dry hair, the conditioner can also be used as a quick deep conditioning treatment.
  3. Apply the leave-in conditioning cream to towel-dried (not dripping wet) hair—from roots to ends.
  4. Style your hair with curling cream, gel, or mousse—work it through your hair and scrunch the curls into shape.
  5. Finish with styling gel for extra hold and definition (optional).
  6. Finish – Rub 2 drops of oil into your palms and scrunch your hair again for extra shine and protection. (You can also do this after your hair has dried to break up the frizz.)
  7. Dry using the diffuser or let it air dry.

Curling methods – which one is right for you?

Depending on your hair's porosity, there are different methods for effectively locking in moisture. Cantu works for all three.

CGM
Curly Method
The foundation of all curly hair care according to Lorraine Massey: no sulfate shampoos, no silicones, and no blow-drying on high heat. Just moisturizing cleansers, conditioners, and styling products. Cantu is fully CGM-compatible.
LOC
Liquid · Oil · Cream
Recommended for high porosity: Start with water (L), then a lightweight oil to seal in moisture (O), and finish with Cantu Leave-in or Curling Cream (C). This order helps lock moisture into your hair for longer.
LCO
Liquid · Cream · Oil
Recommended for medium porosity: Start with water (L), then apply Cantu Leave-in Cream (C), and finish with a few drops of oil to seal in the moisture (O). Apply the cream before the oil—this helps the moisture absorb better into the hair.

Methods based on: Lorraine Massey – Curly : The Handbook* (Workman Publishing, 2011)

Cantu in the LOC Method (for high-porosity hair)

People with high-porosity curls benefit especially from the The LOC Method for High-Porosity Curls. Cantu is ideal for this purpose:

L
Liquid
Water or a light leave-in spray as a moisturizing base
O
Oil
A light oil (such as jojoba oil or argan oil) locks in moisture
C
Cream
Cantu Leave-in Cream or Curling Cream lock in moisture
Important: If you have low-porosity hair, use less of the product. A small amount is sufficient, and if you experience product buildup, an occasional deep-cleansing wash can help.

5. Cantu & the Curly Method – Is Cantu CG-safe?

Most Cantu products are CG-friendly—free of silicones, sulfates, and parabens. However, not every product in the brand’s lineup is automatically CG-safe, as Cantu offers a very wide range of products.

At lockenkopf , we lockenkopf products that have slipped into our lineup and aren’t CG-safe right below the product description—so you know exactly where you stand at a glance. Most of the products we carry are CG-compatible. Just check the label in the shop.

7. Why isn't Cantu working for me?

Cantu is a great brand—but like any hair care product, it works differently on different hair types. Here are the most common issues and what causes them.

Curls hang down

Too much product. Cantu is rich—start with a small amount and add more only if needed.

Oily, heavy hair

Product buildup caused by shea butter residue. Solution: Wash regularly with a deep-cleansing shampoo.

No definition

Incorrect product combination. A leave-in conditioner alone is often not enough—use a defining styling product as well.

My hair feels dry

Protein-moisture imbalance. Some Cantu products contain proteins—if you have a sensitivity to protein, switch to protein-free alternatives.

8. When you should avoid using Cantu

Cantu isn't the right choice for every hair type. If this sounds like you, you might want to consider a gentler alternative.

Fine hair

Rich formulas are too heavy for fine hair—the curls lose volume and go limp. Light, water-based products work better.

Low-porosity hair

The hair cuticles are closed—rich butters don't absorb well and end up building up. The result: heavy, dull hair with product buildup.

Hair that gets oily quickly

The shea butter base can put additional strain on the scalp. Gel-based products are the better choice here.
