The Ultimate Cantu Care for Kids Guide:
Gentle Curl Care for Little Curly-Headed Ones – Ages 3 and Up

Last updated: April 2026 · lockenkopf.ch

1. The difference from regular Cantu products

Many parents ask themselves: Can't I just use the regular Cantu products for my child? The answer is: Cantu Kids is specially formulated—and that makes all the difference.

Cantu Kids – designed especially for children

  • Milder surfactants that don't sting the eyes
  • Formulated to be tear-free
  • Lighter textures that don't weigh you down
  • Less intense fragrances
  • Easier to spread and rinse off

Standard Cantu products

  • More nourishing formulas for adult hair
  • Greater cleaning power
  • More intensive care – can be too much for children
  • Not tear-free
  • Harder to dispense for small hands
Important: Children's hair is finer and more delicate than adult hair. Cantu Kids' gentler formulas are specifically designed for this—without compromising on effectiveness.

2. Which children is Cantu Kids suitable for?

Cantu Kids is designed for children ages 3 and up with curly, wavy, or coily . The products are especially suitable for:

👶 Children ages 3 and up
Wavy Wavy
Curly Curly
Coily Coily
Kinky Kinky

Cantu Care for Kids is suitable for Curly 3a–3c), Coily Kinky 4a–4c) hair—for children ages 3 and up.

  • Children ages 3 and up with curly, wavy, or coily hair
  • Dry, frizzy children's hair
  • Sensitive scalp
  • Kids who don't like having their hair washed

Less suitable for

  • Babies under 3 years of age (milder baby care products recommended)

4. How do you properly care for children's curls?

Children's hair requires a different routine than adult hair—shorter, more playful, and without pressure. The most important things are consistency and patience. With the right routine, hair care becomes an enjoyable experience for both parents and children.

The Wash Day Routine for Kids' Curls

  1. Detangle before washing —moisten with water or spray on the Conditioning Detangler, then gently detangle with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Never comb dry curls.
  2. Wash with tear-free shampoo (if available)—apply to wet hair and massage in gently. For children with sensitive skin, use Co-Wash the adult line instead.
  3. Massage in the conditioner, let it sit for 2–3 minutes, then rinse with cool water. Optional: comb through with a wide-tooth comb.
  4. Apply Curling Cream or Custard to towel-dried hair—work it in section by section from root to tip. Shape the curls and scrunch them gently.
  5. Air drying is the gentlest method. If using a diffuser: set it to the lowest heat setting and never use the hot setting.

Between laundry days

  1. Spray the conditioning detangler onto dry or damp curls.
  2. Gently work through the hair with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
  3. Put a little Curling Cream in your hands and gently revive your curls.
Tip for stress-free wash days: When detangling, always work from the ends up—never from the roots. This significantly reduces hair breakage and prevents tangles.

5. The Curly Method for Kids – What Applies to Little Ones with Curls?

The Curly Method by Lorraine Massey (Curly : The Handbook, 2011) was developed for adults—but its basic principles apply just as much to children. Lorraine Massey even devotes an entire chapter to children’s curls: “Teaching kids to love their curls” —because when you learn early on to care for and love your curls, that lesson stays with you for a lifetime.

CGM Guidelines for Children's Curls

What the Curly Method Means for Kids – Simplified and Kid-Friendly.

Sulfate-free
Gentle cleaning
No sulfates in shampoos—they’re especially harmful to children’s hair because they strip away all the natural oils. Cantu Kids Shampoo is sulfate-free.
Moisture
Maintain daily
Children's curls need daily moisture. Using a detangler between washes keeps curls supple and prevents tangles.
No hair dryer
Air drying is preferred
Heat is particularly damaging to children's curls. Lorraine Massey recommends: air-drying, using a microfiber towel, or plopping—never a hot hair dryer.

Based on: Lorraine Massey – Curly : The Handbook*, Chapter 12, "Curly " (Workman Publishing, 2011)

What's different about children compared to adults

Children's curls differ from adults' curls in a few key ways:

aspect Children's curls Adult curls
Sensitivity Very sensitive scalp; gentler formulas are needed More durable, can handle more
Wash frequency 1–2 times a week, depending on your activity level Custom
Styling Quick and easy—no long sessions This can be time-consuming
Products Specially formulated for children's hair Adult products
Collaboration A playful approach helps Not necessary
From *The Curly Handbook*: Lorraine Massey recommends involving children in hair care from an early age—let them scrunch, apply products, or spray the detangler themselves. That way, curls become a joy, not a burden.

6. Recommendations Based on the Child's Hair Type

Hair type Recommended Cantu Kids Products
Curly 3a–3b) Nourishing Conditioner + Curling Cream – Lightweight and Defining
Curly 3c) Nourishing Conditioner + Styling Custard for extra hold
Coily 4a–4b) Nourishing Conditioner + Curling Cream + Detangler (daily)
Kinky 4c) Plenty of conditioner + custard for textured styles and ponytails
low porosity A small amount of curling cream, plenty of moisture while washing
Medium porosity All products work well – standard procedure
Very fine hair Just conditioner + a little curling cream – lightweight formulas

7. Common Problems with Children’s Curls—and How Cantu Kids Can Help

Tangles and knots

The most common problem with children's curls. Solution: Spray on a conditioning detangler every day and always detangle from the ends up—never from the roots.

The child doesn't like having their hair washed

Use tear-free shampoo (once it’s back in stock). Until then: use more conditioner, less shampoo, and cool water. Make wash days fun.

Dry, brittle curls

More moisture: Use a detangler every day, leave the curling cream in, and use a satin pillowcase. Avoid hair clips that pull on your hair.

Frizz after drying

Do not touch your hair while it is drying. Apply Styling Custard to very damp hair and let it air dry. Do not rub with a towel.

8. What to keep in mind with Cantu Care for Kids

Conditioning Detangler – contains silicones

The Conditioning Detangler contains amodimethicone and dimethicone—so it is not CG-safe. This is clearly noted on the product page in the shop. If you strictly follow the CG method, you should choose a different detangler.

Not ideal for adults

The formulas are designed for children's hair—lighter and gentler than the adult line. For adults, we recommend the Cantu main line.

Many products sell out quickly

Shampoo, leave-in conditioner, curl refresher, and pre-shampoo sell out quickly. Sign up to be notified when these products are back in stock.
