The Ultimate Bounce Curl Guide:
Science Meets Nature—For Defined, Healthy Curls

Last updated: June 2026 · lockenkopf.ch

1. What makes Bounce Curl special?

Bounce Curl was founded in 2015 by Merian Odesho —a chemist with curly hair and a clear mission: “Help You Embrace The Natural You.” Inspired by her grandmother’s traditional Mesopotamian recipes, the brand combines science with nature—featuring black cumin oil (Nigella sativa) as its signature active ingredient.

What sets Bounce Curl apart from other brands:

  • Black cumin oil as a signature active ingredient —rich in antioxidants, nourishing, and traditionally used to promote healthy hair.
  • Concentrated Formulas – A little goes a long way; can be applied sparingly.
  • Consistently Clean – free of silicones, sulfates, parabens, mineral oil, and PEGs.
  • Vegan & cruelty-free – All formulas are plant-based and developed without animal testing.
  • Think Dirty Rating 0–3 – all products with top ratings for clean ingredients.

2. Who is Bounce Curl suitable for?

Women Men Teens Children ages 3 and up
Wavy Wavy
Curly Curly
Coily Coily
Kinky Kinky

Bounce Curl is suitable for all curl types—from wavy (2a–2c) to kinky (4c). The lightweight formulas are particularly well-suited for those with wavy or curly hair who are looking for volume without weighing their hair down.

Particularly well suited for

  • All hair types: wavy, curly, coily, and kinky
  • Wavy (2a–2c): For those looking for volume without weight
  • Low, Medium, and High Porosity Hair
  • Protein-Balance Requirements (Formulas with a Balanced Protein-to-Moisture Ratio)
  • Children, Teens, Adults
  • Everyone who is committed to clean beauty without compromise
  • For those who want to minimize their routine—concentrated formulas

Please note

  • The Light Cream Gel contains oils—it may react with oil-based products from other brands (may leave white residue in the hair)
  • Hair that is very sensitive to protein: Shampoos and gels contain plant-based proteins—check the ingredient list first
  • If you have fragrance sensitivity: Bounce Curl uses natural fragrances—test for sensitivity beforehand

Cleaning

Weightless Shampoo

A lightweight, sulfate-free shampoo for all hair types—formulated for curly hair that needs volume without weighing it down. Thoroughly cleanses the scalp and removes product buildup without stripping away natural oils. Especially popular with those who have wavy or finer curly hair. Black cumin oil and botanical extracts nourish the scalp during cleansing.

Pure Silk Moisturizing Shampoo

A moisturizing, sulfate-free shampoo for dry, thick, or porous hair—instantly replenishes moisture while you wash. Especially suitable for coily and kinky hair types that require intensive care right from the start. A silky-soft formula for curls that are supple and easy to manage after washing.

Care

Super Smooth Cream Conditioner

Moisturizing conditioner with organic aloe vera, panthenol (provitamin B5), and black cumin oil. Gently detangles and gives curls bounce and suppleness. Work into hair from the ends to the roots using a wide-tooth comb or your fingers, leave on for 3–5 minutes, then rinse with cool water. Do not rinse out completely—leave a little in your hair for extra conditioning.

Skincare Highlight

Moisture Balance Leave-In Conditioner

Leave-in treatment with rose oil and fenugreek botanicals—specifically formulated to balance moisture. Leaves curls soft and shiny without adding extra hold. Ideal as the first styling step on damp hair or to refresh your look between washes. Do not rinse out. Can be used on its own or as a base before applying the Light Creme Gel—for curls that don’t need a layer of cream.

Weightless Conditioning Mask

Deep Conditioning Mask for Intensive Moisturizing Treatment – a lightweight formula that’s also suitable for finer hair without weighing it down. Use weekly or every two weeks as a deep conditioning treatment: apply after shampooing, leave on for 5–15 minutes under a plastic cap, then rinse with cool water. Provides curls with intensive regeneration without weighing them down.

Styling

Light Cream Gel

The heart of the brand—a lightweight gel-cream hybrid with black cumin oil (Nigella sativa), jojoba esters, oat protein, and aloe vera. Provides gentle hold without crunch, flaking, or weighing hair down. Ideal for all curl types—especially popular with wavy and curly hair. Apply to very damp hair and scrunch it in. Works on its own after a leave-in conditioner or directly on washed, damp hair. The gel works best with other Bounce Curl products—a “squeaky” reaction with other brands is a sign of incompatibility (it will still look good after drying).

Clump & Define Cream – Avocado & Rose Oil

Medium-hold styling cream with 10 high-quality oils—including organic black cumin oil, avocado oil, Egyptian Abyssinian oil, Moroccan rose oil, and argan oil. Moisturizes and defines at the same time: creates soft, clumpy curls with light hold. Concentrated formula—use sparingly. Also ideal for reviving Day 2 and Day 3 hair. Can be used on its own or as a base under the Light Cream Gel for more definition and hold.

Alcohol-Free Hairspray

Alcohol-free hairspray for finishing or refreshing—holds curls without drying them out. Ideal after styling for extra hold, or between washes to reactivate and refresh. Contains no drying alcohols—gentle on curly hair. Spray onto curls from a distance of about 20–30 cm; do not rub in.

4. How do you use Bounce Curl?

The Wash Day Routine

  1. Cleansing – Weightless Shampoo for finer curls, Pure Silk Shampoo for thicker, dry hair. Apply to damp hair, gently massage into the scalp, and rinse with cool water.
  2. Conditioner – Work in the Super Smooth Cream Conditioner and let it sit for 3–5 minutes. Detangle with a wide-tooth comb. Rinse out most of it, leaving a little in the hair.
  3. Deep Treatment (optional, once a week) – Use the Weightless Conditioning Mask instead of conditioner. Leave on for 5–15 minutes under heat or a plastic cap, then rinse out.
  4. Leave-In – Apply Moisture Balance Leave-In to damp hair section by section; do not rinse. It creates soft curls and prepares the hair for styling.
  5. Styling – Clump & Define Cream for extra moisture and clumping, followed by Light Cream Gel for definition and hold. Or use Light Cream Gel on its own, applying it directly over your leave-in conditioner. Always apply to very damp hair, then scrunch.
  6. Remove excess water —gently scrunch with the Hair Drying Mittens; do not rub.
  7. Drying – Use a diffuser or let your hair air dry. Lift the hair at the roots with the Volume EdgeLift Brush for more volume. Do not touch your hair while it’s drying.
  8. Finish – Optionally, spray alcohol-free hairspray onto dry curls for extra hold.

Between Laundry Days

  1. Spray alcohol-free hairspray or a little water onto dry curls.
  2. Gently work through the curls with your fingers or the Volume Brush.
  3. Optional: Scrunch a little Moisture Balance Leave-In or a dab of Clump & Define Cream into the ends.
  4. For Day 3 hair: Lightly dampen your curls, scrunch in a little Light Cream Gel, and air-dry or diffuse briefly.

Methods for Creating Curls with Bounce Curl

Bounce Curl is suitable for all standard curling routines—it's especially popular in the LCO method for medium-porosity hair.

Compatibility Tip: The Light Creme Gel works best when used with other Bounce Curl products. If you use products from other brands underneath it and notice a “squeaky” feeling, that’s due to an incompatibility between the oils. Your curls will still look good after drying—but for best results, build your entire routine around Bounce Curl products.

5. Bounce Curl & the Curly Girl Method

From the very beginning, Bounce Curl has been consistently formulated to be CG-safe—vegan and free of silicones, sulfates, parabens, mineral oil, PEGs, and other undesirable ingredients. The brand meets all the basic requirements of the Curly Girl Method without exception.

Of particular interest to the CGM community: Bounce Curl pays special attention to the protein-moisture balance. Shampoos and styling products contain plant-based proteins (hydrolyzed quinoa, oat protein), while conditioners and the Clump & Define Cream are formulated without protein. This allows for a balanced routine that prevents both protein overload and moisture loss.

Note for protein-sensitive hair: The Light Cream Gel and the shampoos contain plant-based proteins. If you are highly sensitive to protein, you should start by using the Clump & Define Cream and the Moisture Balance Leave-In and monitor your reaction before incorporating the gel into your routine.

7. Common Problems & Solutions with Bounce Curl

The gel swells when applied

Incompatibility with oils from other brands' products. Solution: Use Bounce Curl products as your complete routine—the Light Creme Gel will then work well. The result after drying is still good.

Curls hanging down, too much weight

Too much Clump & Define Cream or Light Creme Gel. Both formulas are concentrated—use very sparingly. For finer hair: use Light Creme Gel on its own without the Cream, or apply the Cream only to the ends.

Lack of definition; curls fall apart

Always apply the gel to very damp hair. Make sure to use enough product—Bounce Curl formulas are concentrated, but you still need to use a sufficient amount. When styling, scrunch the curls in sections.

Excess protein; hair feels brittle

Shampoos and Light Cream Gel contain plant-based proteins. If you notice signs of excess protein (hair feels straw-like), take a break from using the gel and use more moisturizing products (Clump & Define Cream, Moisture Balance Leave-In).

Frizz Despite Using Gel

Gel should be applied to very wet hair—the wetter, the better. Do not touch your curls after styling until they are completely dry. Use hair-drying mittens instead of a towel.

Curls lose their shape after a day

Applying alcohol-free hairspray to dry curls helps maintain their shape. For a Day 2 refresh: lightly dampen your hair, scrunch in a little Moisture Balance Leave-In or Clump & Define Cream, and then diffuse or air-dry again.

8. Frequently Asked Questions About Bounce Curl (FAQ)

What hair types is Bounce Curl suitable for?
For all types of curls. From wavy (2a) to kinky (4c). The lightweight formulas—especially the Light Cream Gel—are also suitable for wavy hair types looking for volume without weighing their hair down. The richer oil-based products, such as the Clump & Define Cream, are especially popular with coily and kinky hair types.
Is Bounce Curl CG-safe?
Yes—consistently. All products are vegan, cruelty-free, and free of silicones, sulfates, parabens, mineral oil, and PEGs. Bounce Curl is one of the few brands that has all of its ingredients verified by the Think Dirty rating (rating 0–3 = very clean).
What is black cumin oil, and why is it included in Bounce Curl products?
Black cumin oil (Nigella sativa) is a traditional Mesopotamian oil rich in antioxidants and nourishing compounds. Bounce Curl founder Merian Odesho has incorporated the oil into modern formulas, drawing on her family’s traditions. It adds shine to curls, nourishes the scalp, and is one of the brand’s signature ingredients.
Does the Light Cream Gel form a hard cast?
No. The Light Creme Gel is 80% gel and 20% cream—it provides gentle hold without any crunch. Curls remain soft and touchable. A light SOTC (Scrunch Out the Crunch) after the hair is completely dry is still recommended.
Can I mix Bounce Curl with other brands?
With some restrictions. The Light Creme Gel contains specific oils that may react with certain external ingredients. This is indicated by a “squeaky” sensation when applying the product. This does not affect the final result—the curls look great once dry. For best results, Bounce Curl recommends using its own product line as a complete routine.
Is Bounce Curl suitable for children?
Yes. The gentle, botanical formulas are dermatologically tested and suitable for all age groups—including children ages 3 and up with curly hair. Use sparingly and be mindful of possible sensitivity to fragrances.
How often should I wash my hair with Bounce Curl?
Washing your hair 1–2 times a week is ideal for most curl types. These concentrated styling products usually last several days. Between washes, revive your curls with the Alcohol-Free Hairspray or a little water and Moisture Balance Leave-In.
